چکیده

The pneumatic method is a novel determining vulnerability to embolism in plants, yet it remains unclear whether this suitable for all species with different xylem anatomy. In study, using six tree contrasting anatomy, including four vessel-bearing (diffuse-porous wood and ring-porous wood) two tracheid-bearing (non-porous wood), we test the reliability of by comparing hydraulic methods also considering turgor loss point native embolism. Vessel length distribution cut-open vessel volume were evaluated silicone injection technique. Additionally, synthesized published data find out consistency between methods. Results showed that there was maximum 10-folds difference mean diameter varying from 30 56 μm among species. estimated open ranges 0.064 0.397 mL, 14% tube vacuum reservoir. For species, good methods, evidenced significantly overestimated because bad consistencies plant water relations. Data synthesis suggested can accurately measure but not Our study provided further evidence accurate most thus has potential be widely used hydraulics field. However, proposed precise calculation air discharge should take into account vessels wide long vessels.

Interspecific variation in xylem vulnerability to cavitation among tropical tree and shrub species.

In tropical moist forests, seasonal drought limits plant survival, productivity and diversity. Drought-tolerance mechanisms of tropical species should reflect the maximum seasonal water deficits experienced in a particular habitat. We investigated stem xylem vulnerability to cavitation in nine tropical species with different life histories and habitat associations. Stem xylem vulnerability was ...

Xylem vulnerability to cavitation can be accurately characterised in species with long vessels using a centrifuge method.

Vulnerability to cavitation curves describe the decrease in xylem hydraulic conductivity as xylem pressure declines. Several techniques for constructing vulnerability curves use centrifugal force to induce negative xylem pressure in stem or root segments. Centrifuge vulnerability curves constructed for long-vesselled species have been hypothesised to overestimate xylem vulnerability to cavitati...

Xylem conductivity and vulnerability to cavitation of ponderosa pine growing in contrasting climates.

We examined the effects of increased transpiration demand on xylem hydraulic conductivity and vulnerability to cavitation of mature ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) by comparing trees growing in contrasting climates. Previous studies determined that trees growing in warm and dry sites (desert) had half the leaf/sapwood area ratio (A(L)/A(S)) and more than twice the transpiration rate of t...

Testing the plant pneumatic method to estimate xylem embolism resistance in stems of temperate trees.

Methods to estimate xylem embolism resistance generally rely on hydraulic measurements, which can be far from straightforward. Recently, a pneumatic method based on air flow measurements of terminal branch ends was proposed to construct vulnerability curves by linking the amount of air extracted from a branch with the degree of embolism. We applied this novel technique for 10 temperate tree spe...
